Landesforschungspreis 2007 for Prof. Dr. D. Wolf
|
|
The head of the scientific advisory board of micro-biolytics, Prof. Dr. D. Wolf, is given the ‚Landesforschungspreis 2007’.
Prof. Dr. Frankenberg, Minister of Science of Baden-Württemberg presented this tribute to Prof. Wolf to honour
„outstanding research results and excellent researchers“. Prof. Wolfs research on the protein degrading systems
of the eukoryotic cell, the proteasome and the lysosome is regarded a breakthrough in cellular research.
In 1996 (Science 273, 1725-1728), the Wolf group discovered the retrotranslocation of a misfolded, fully
glycosylated lumenal protein ( CPY* ) of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) back into the cytoplasm and its
degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome system (ERAD). CPY* as a model substrate of ER protein quality
control and degradation (ERQD) was established. The 1996 Science publication, which made a dogma fall and
opened a new field of research, was considered a landmark paper of cell biology (Landmark Papers in Yeast
Cell Biology, P. Linder, D. Shore and M. N. Hall, eds., pp. 273-274, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press [2006]).

European commission evaluation
|
|
In 2006, micro-biolytics was evaluated by the European Union (IRMM/EC) in BSE diagnostics:
the ante mortem BSE test based on the AquaSpec™ Technology. The 100% subsidiary DiaSpec GmbH,
which was founded in 2001, was accountable for the commercial and regulatory aspects of this
BSE test. The results of the evaluation published in January 2007 show the great potential
of the AquaSpec™ Technology in diagnostic spectroscopy: for the first time, an officially
and externally evaluated spectroscopic test reached such a high performance with a diagnostic
efficiency of up to 88%.
IRMM has evaluated a live animal BSE test. This is the first time such an evaluation has
been made. The test was selected to enter IRMM's evaluation programme in the frame of a
call for the expression of interest published by Health and Consumer Protection DG in 2003.
The test of the company DiaSpec (Freiburg, DE) is based on a sophisticated method using
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and applies chemometric methods for data analysis.
Blood serum of the animal is analysed and the spectrum obtained is compared to specific
reference features of serum of BSE infected or BSE free animals...

| Room for Growth |

For the expansion of laboratory-, production- as well as service-space, mbio has moved to a new location
at Esslingen (Stuttgart). The expansion was necessary to cope with increasing service and production demands
regarding the AquaSpecTM Technology.
